BOAT WAKE AND STEARNS WHARF AT SUNSET

For this image I walked out to the end of the breakwater protecting the Santa Barbara Harbor to position my camera level with Stearns Wharf. The sun was setting directly behind me. Just before it dropped behind the harbor, it bathed the hills surrounding Santa Barbara in golden light and began to reflect off all the windows of the buildings on the wharf. For about 2 minutes I got a mirror-like reflection of the sun bouncing off a window and then off the deep blue water in the harbor. It was almost blinding and I knew it was something special for my images. I was racing to make 13 second exposures of the scene when a fishing boat powered into the harbor and ripped through this amazing reflected light in the water. I kept making photos while the stupid boat ruined this special light. After the boat passed and the water calmed again the reflected sunlight was gone and the moment was lost. I immediately looked back through the handful of images I had just made and I was absolutely floored. The fishing boat’s wake turned out to be the most beautiful gift. This is Chromascape 098. ~ Marc
