CHROMASCAPE 053

FIRST LIGHT IN THE RAIN ON THE HUDSON RIVER AT 72ND ST

This photograph was made in October on a visit to see my mom in NYC. I walked over to the Hudson River at 72nd St in the dark well before sunrise and set up my camera in the morning rain. The clouds were sitting on the water, and I could barely make out any lights across the river in New Jersey. I couldn’t see the George Washington Bridge lights at all. I was sure this would be a bust of a morning for photos. As the sky began to glow in that beautiful predawn blue, the clouds lifted off the water a bit, and the New Jersey shore and lights became a little more visible. The north remained shrouded in mist and a light rain continued to fall. This is Chromascape 053.

I stood there on the river promenade for almost an hour making chromascapes as the light, clouds, and river continued to change and the city awoke. People of all ages and places in life walked, biked, or ran past me. Some stopped and chatted, taking time to watch my capture process and looking at the results on my iPad. Two women, clearly best friends, sat on a bench beside where I was working. They talked excitedly of a wedding they had just attended, drank coffee and laughed often. Their morning ritual, rain or shine. I have always loved the people and the energy that is NYC.  ~ Marc
