CHROMASCAPE 086
SUNRISE ON BARKER RESERVOIR
This image is the result of a camera test if you can believe it. I love printing these chromascapes and seeing them big at 60” x 40” is absolutely breathtaking. They have such a great presence hanging in a room. The details that reveal themselves when peering into a large print are magical. Now that I’ve traveled this Chromascape path for a bit, I want more resolution to tell these stories. More resolution means stepping up to a medium format camera. The Fujifilm GFX100S did not disappoint. It’s the same weight and size as my Nikon D850, yet the mirrorless Fuji reduces vibration on long exposures and has a sensor that captures more than 4x the information. I have not seen details resolved like this in my own work since the analog days. I’m not ashamed to say it, but I’m in love.
All the photographers out there can confirm that for a simple throwaway camera test, you just shoot the test in your studio or in your back yard. Barker Reservoir is 10 minutes away from my house and when you live at 8200’ in the beautiful Colorado Rocky Mountains, that counts as your backyard. I set up at 5am on the west side of the reservoir as the morning sky began to glow and shot into the sunrise. There was fairly significant cloud cover, which in my experience means an amazing sunrise or a total bust. This morning was not a bust. Chromascape 086 is looking east across the reservoir towards Boulder as the sun glows though the clouds above the dam while the rippling water doubles the morning light. ~ Marc
