CHROMASCAPE 109
SUNRISE ON MANLY LAKE ON BADWATER SALT FLATS
I had the thrill of visiting Death Valley after the historic floods in summer of 2023. While most of the park was still digging out from the floods and massive shift of dirt, rock and sands that covered many of the roadways, I traveled to Badwater Basin to photograph Manly Lake. The lake spanned the valley floor and was 5+ miles long. It was breathtaking to see such a large expanse of water in a place known for its lack of water. This photo was made from the Badwater Salt Flats as the morning sun rose above the mountains behind me bathing the desolate hills across me in orange morning light. Just a bit of shadow still remained on the bank of Manly Lake creating a beautiful blue patch of water. The reason the water is such a bright blue is the lake is only about 3 feet deep and covers the white salt flats. The contrast of colors (warm and cool) and of nature (a lake in one of the driest places on earth) in this moment in time was striking to me. This is Chromascape 109. ~ Marc
