STERNS WHARF

I went to school in Santa Barbara at Brooks Institute of Photograph in the 90’s. For our first class, BA-1, we had to walk around Santa Barbara and make photos. Many students ended up at Sterns Wharf in the Harbor. I would venture to guess that out of the tens of thousands of photos submitted for that class over the years, not one photo was ever made of this cross-section of the piers and roadway with parked cars. On a recent visit to Santa Barbara I was on the wharf in the middle of the day scouting for locations I wanted to be at for sunset that evening. While walking next to the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History Sea Center, my gaze was drawn down to the beautiful emerald colors in the water below me and the bright coral blues of the harbor waters visible through the pilings. In making this image I blended the black pilings with the small area of bright blue waters visible through the gaps in the pilings creating a much darker hue of blue. The shadow of the wharf clearly falls over the water. The lines traversing the top third of the image are the sun-bleached wooden roadway, the electrical and fresh water conduits, the red water line for the fire department, the black slats of the railing, and sunlight reflecting off the cars in the parking lot. The line traversing the sky is a string of lights that run the length of the wharf. Chromascape 107 is an interesting cross-section of colors found on Sterns Wharf and in the water below. ~ Marc
